Street signs

Street Signs was a creative project that explored how signage can shape our experience of place. Rather than simply providing directions, the project used playful and unexpected signs to prompt people to look again at the streets around them.

Working with MIMA Saturday Club, Sawdust developed a series of alternative street signs that responded to the character and stories of different places or messages the club wanted to display as part of the project. The signs are to then be installed in public spaces as small interventions designed to spark curiosity, conversation and reflection.

By introducing humour, creativity and local references into the language of street signage, the project encouraged people to think differently about their environment and about the role design can play in shaping public space.

Street Signs demonstrated how small, imaginative interventions can interrupt the everyday and open up new ways of engaging with the city.

This project was funded by Arts Council England.
